I was fortunate to get to work with Ian, Karen, and Trent in the early days of MVM. Ian was so inspiring and he took on every challenge and opportunity with a smile and a simple question, "how do we make that happen?" He just willed things into existence. One evening while meeting as part of the communications team, we came up with idea of creating an annual benefit concert and an album release of student songs and collaborations. The ball just started rolling. When one of my band's got to perform at the inaugural concert, he connected with my bandmate, CJ Mead, who was running after school programming for students in the SUN program at David Douglas. They quickly said, "let's make something happen for those students." They built out the idea of an after school music and recording lab, providing an outlet for several students who were finding their voice. Like magic, it just came together. Ian and MVM touched our hearts and demonstrated the healing power of music.
After Ian's passing, I went to the candlelight vigil at Laurelhurst park and was deeply touched by the impact that he had in the community. When everyone came together to sing the MVM theme song, "Let it Be," by the Beatles, it touched my heart. It was a strong reminder about the power of music to bring people together, share stories, and connect on a universal level. When I got home, I grabbed an acoustic guitar and sat out on the porch and strummed a few chords thinking about how many young people he impacted and how no one got to say goodbye. the song just wrote itself in a matter of minutes.
Given that Ian had a profound impact on CJ and I, it felt right to bring the tune to our newest project, Norwester Sky. With the help of our friends, we were able to bring it to life by recording the tune at our friend's cabin in the woods. I kept thinking that we were using the same principals he shared with so many about expressing your feelings through music. We also thought he would be proud to see this broader songwriting project come together. I know that his spirit will live on forever in the hearts and minds of this wonderful community that Ian and Karen created.
