How the group works:

Groups usually consist of 8-11 adolescent immigrants from Mexico and Latin America with little to no musical experience. To facilitate the group, we start off with a drum jam using rhythmic instruments such as hand drums, toms, shakers, tambourines, and bells. For about 10 minutes, we work on keeping a steady rhythm and playing with dynamics. After the drum jam, we facilitate a sing-a-long with contemporary Spanish songs, which helps youth to get more comfortable with taking musical risks in a group setting.

Next, to facilitate the lyric writing process, participants are asked to create word and image collages from a box of pre-cut images as they wish. This helps us to generate some type of theme or lyrical content to work with later. After collages, we teach the youth how to play 2-3 chords on the ukulele and then start applying some of the lyrical ideas to the chords with a simple melody. Often times we start with a chorus (which comes from the word collaging) and go from there. Once we have some lyrics and music, we work on practicing the song together before recording our final creation! The youth in this program all participate at various points of the creative process, whether it's collaging lyrics, playing ukulelee, playing percussion, or just singing the chorus with everyone.

This program is incredibly important because it gives immigrant youth who are experiencing acute trauma the opportunity to explore, play around, learn a new creative skill, and develop expressive tools for healthy emotional processing that they can hopefully use in the future.
