about

These songs were created and recorded inside residential treatment centers where MVM staff have to walk through locked doors- to reach youth with music- on the other side. Many youth have been in these mental health treatment centers for months, if not years. It’s an intense, unpredictable, and raw environment where youth are often “hyper-therapized” and diagnosed with a multitude of behavioral and mental health diagnoses from a young age. The most important thing we do at MVM is to meet youth where they are, and connect them with opportunities to share in our common humanity, and love of music.

These songs are a small selection of the many songs written with youth- over the past 2 years- at residential mental health facilities. During sessions, they can say anything on the mic for it’s a safe place to explore emotions, welcome all parts, and have their story held and witnessed by another. One of my favorite things about this work is what can come into fruition, organically, without an objective or expectation of “healing” or “helping”, and the magic that can occur when you simply show up, and meet people where they are. Beautiful, powerful, touching, and honest songs can be born, giving an opportunity for pain and suffering to be alchemized into confidence and connection. Holding space for pain and process is just as important as creating opportunities for the development of new skills. The questions we ask shouldn’t be, “How can people and systems fix the suffering of individuals?” This line of thinking strips individuals of their own agency and expertise, and places the center of power in others. Rather, the line of questioning ought to be, “How do we show up in a way that is vulnerable enough to be absent of answers, but instead holds space for the silence of pain and the cacophony that anger brings?” This is the space that MVM exists in. This is the space where these songs were born.

"The human soul doesn’t want to be advised or fixed or saved. It simply wants to be witnessed — to be seen, heard and companioned exactly as it is. When we make that kind of deep bow to the soul of a suffering person, our respect reinforces the soul’s healing resources, the only resources that can help the sufferer make it through."
