Music has always been my way to process, cope, and heal. 10 years ago, when I found MVM and Ian, I knew this was the place for me. Ian valued my gift and uplifted my voice and potential, like he did with so many. He and MVM helped me find my power and strength, when I was disoriented and uncertain. Ian was my boss, but he was also a mentor and friend. When he died, I had to write a song for him, because that's what he would have encouraged. So I did what we instruct many of our youth to do. I sat down, began, and trusted what unfolded. I processed some of my grief and pain and created something I'm proud of. I titled it "Phoenix", which came directly from the last newsletter Ian wrote, before leaving on his bike ride: "Sometimes I get to feel like a Phoenix rising as I pedal through pouring rain and up mountains". Sometimes I imagine Ian riding, into the great beyond, a majestic Phoenix rising. - Forest Veil
