If you're lucky in life you'll have a friendship with someone where you feel like cosmic twins once removed. Where you understand each other in ways other people probably never will. Where you work for the good of each other and, in a very real sense, you store a piece of your heart in that friend. Ian was a friend like that for me. We were born just days apart and met in our 20s both running arts agencies for youth. After Ian passed Trent Finlay showed me this photo of the two of us together. We're at some arts shindig. Clearly both showing up to do advocacy for the causes we were spearheading. Clearly happy to see each other again. And we look like a couple of lions. The last time I wrote a song that hurt this much, line by line, to write was when my father passed away over 10 years ago. I remember talking with Ian about it on the phone. About the way songs let us weave together the many facets of complex situations where our feelings are very mixed. He told me he had a complicated relationship with his dad too, and that he understood. And that he agreed writing a song would be a good way to sing out my grief, particularly when it's not just grief I'm processing. He told me it was ok to let those expressions mix in the song. As I was writing this song for Ian I thought about that talk. And I laughed a bit. Ian Mouser was doing what Ian Mouser did best, only he was doing it for me in that moment. He was MyVoicing me about my music. Well played, Ian. And thank you. - Mr. Noah Kleiman
